Son of God

Called out of Egypt — God’s own Son.

Name of Jesus

'Son of God' speaks of Jesus' unique relationship with the Father — sharing the Father's nature, will, and authority. Not adopted, not created: eternally Son.

Key Scripture

And a voice from heaven said, 'This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.'

Matthew 3:17 (NIV)

  • John 1:34
  • Hebrews 1:1–3

Word Roots

  • Greek: υἱὸς τοῦ θεοῦ huios tou theou — 'Son of God.'
  • Note: In the Hebrew Scriptures, kings, angels, and Israel itself are sometimes called 'sons of God.' The New Testament uses the phrase of Jesus in a unique, singular sense.
